In India there are perhaps only three things that caputre the eyes of the mass. Movies ,cricket and weddings. Today we gonna talk about movies esp. the changing role of Bollywood villians.
In the early days the villian used to be the strong father who was against the marriage of his daughter to a lower class charecter. Then there used to be the corrupt lover in the triangular love stories who wanted to get the heroine but ultimately failed (remember Dilip Kumar starrer 'Ram Aur Shaym').The villian used to be bad, cruel and wanted to defeat the heri and cause damage to the people . Then there were the villians who were the enimies of the State like a many Dev Anand films.
The promoters and politicians became villian since the 1960s. Then in the year 1973 everything changed as a tall person with a voice of gold became an anti-hero in films started with the film 'Zanzeer.' The emergency and the discontent of the people made the rise of angry young man 'Amitabh Bachchan.' His role in the film Dewaar became a pioneer of anti-hero films. For the first time the villian was treated with compassion .
The next superstar Shahrukh Khan became an anti-hero in the films 'Darr' , 'Bazigar' etc. If we look at the evolution of villians in Hindi cinema then we can see that the charector which was thought to be evil is now a better person with his own set of problems. The villian was no more an evil person but a person with shades and this evolution made him a loving hero or to say in accurate terms , ' the anti-hero'.
